ALERT - TECH SUPPORT PHONE SCAMS
Veterans have reported being Scammed by Calls out of India
There has been a surge of reports again about people being scammed by calls from India claiming to be Microsoft, Dell, or Google Tech support, or in recent cases have said they are computer company your are contracted with Remember, never allow anyone in your computer, or provide anyone with your personal information if the contact is not made by you with the telephone numbers provided on your warranty or given to you during the program you attended. One of our veterans was recently victimized and others are receiving cold calls from Indian Speaking persons, which many of you relate to Dell, one of the contractors you may have received your computer from. Here are a few examples of what they will tell you.
Þ Trick you into installing malicious software that could capture sensitive data, such as online banking user names and passwords. They might also then charge you to remove this software.
Þ Take control of your computer remotely and adjust settings to leave your computer vulnerable.
Þ Request credit card information so they can bill you for phony services.
Þ Direct you to fraudulent websites and ask you to enter credit card and other personal or financial information there.
You can report these calls to the FTC by telephone 877-382-4357
I have dealt with a Indian guy a couple of times I'm not sure if it's the same guy because they all sound alike, but I was never ask for any personal information, so I'm under the assumption that he is a legit Dell employee because I have his name, number and extension. my only scare is the installing of this program to redirect personal information, so my concern is; should I not trust any of them?
ReplyDeleteHey Elaine this Blog is the joint and I get to be the first one to post on it I rather this than eMail, Booya!!!
ReplyDeleteWhen you contact the number does the dell switchboard pick up? If the number you have reaches him/her directly, than I would be suspicious. The only time you should allow anyone to remotely access your computer is if you initiated the call to Dell. The VA has recently changed its contracts to Dell American Pro Support which eliminates the need to contact India for anything outside of Dell Printer support. All Windows 8 computers are covered under this warranty. I will confirm if prior contracts will be grandfathered under this plan as soon as possible.
ReplyDeleteKeep in mind that anytime you are contacted, you should never provide any personal information to any caller. Instead, take down all of the pertinent information including their telephone number, but call the number you have on file or in the case of a credit card contact the telephone number on the back of your card and confirm any information the caller provided you with.
Thanks' goodness all my experience's with Dell had been through the operator and I had to give the operator his extension each and every time I call. What I experience on my initial call was that I was assigned a primary representative and he provides you with his email address and his extension number, but when ever you call and you give the operator the extension number you may not get your primary rep. you may get some one in his team which is multi ethnic - American, Pakistani, European, and Indian. And they routinely puts you on to their boss to give him a review of the experience of the session with him and if your issues was resolved, so they are always very courteous and respectable towards me, even after I got frustrated and loose my cool with one of the rep. he kept his cool, so he got verbal and a written five star review to his boss from me. Let's see what else ehmmm; Oh yes I had a Pakistani came to my house on one occasion and an American on another; to work on my PC.
Deleteso my experience with Dell has been all good so far.
